Overall, I thought the story had a lot of promise and a plethora of opportunity for both character development, emotional moments, and plot twists – but at the end, the story just felt rushed and missed its mark with me. One simple motion and the chaos is over and all is bright and shiny again the only real person to suffer for this story was the leader of Voryn. This grand battle where death and destruction came crashing in ended so quickly and simply that I almost questioned whether or not I was missing chapters. It’s hinted that Cerys’ mother was the daughter of Voryn’s leader,, but we never get answers and she is brutally murdered before the end catches us off guard.

Nor do we understand why Fox, after he returns to his human form, doesn’t become king… particularly since our Princess didn’t finish her coronation. We never really understand the reasoning behind the power that Cerys suddenly gets, and why it disappears just as quickly. The story was predictable, particularly Fox’s role. The groundwork was laid, but as we walked along with our characters it started to unravel a bit. Our story opens with emotional moments, linking the characters and dragging the reader into the world of an angry, living forest. This monstrous wood, filled with dangers and terror was built beautifully. Ugh, how I wish Ashley would have taken us a little deeper into that forest! Into the legends even, to meet this Lady of the Woods! There was so much magic and intrigue, and the possibilities for the story to really blossom was right there at the edge of the pages, and yet… it didn’t. However, I felt unfulfilled as a reader when I finished the book. The story was sweet – and I felt drawn into the world in which our characters lived in. Beautiful covers, although I will say I loved the Owlcrate black cover and purple-edged pages the most. I ended up with two copies of this novel – one from Owlcrate and one from Fairyloot.
